When The Writing Exchange tested hundreds of sentences to see what advice the 2007 and 2008 grammar checker versions would offer, we found major gaps. For example, they missed 60% of the affect/effect errors and 80% of the run-on sentences.

Definitely continue to pay attention to those red and green squiggly lines, and always check spelling and grammar when you finish creating a document. But remember, your grammar checker is not perfect, and the decisions about good writing are always up to you.
